Our Beginings

History of the Y:
The YMCA organization was founded in London, England in 1844 and came to the United States in 1851. YMCA’s spread fast and were soon serving boys and older men as well as young men. After World War I, women and girls became an active part of the YMCA and today over half of all YMCA members and staff are women. There are over 800 YMCA associations and 2750 YMCA’s around the country.
The YMCA of the USA is located in Chicago, Illinois. Its function is to assist and advise all YMCAs, Boards of Directors and CEOs across the United States in order that they be successful in their communities.
The YMCA of DeKalb County, Inc. was founded in 1914. Through its years of existence the
YMCA has grown into a membership / program based YMCA for the whole DeKalb County. There are two locations: Main Street YMCA which was founded in 1914 and North Street YMCA which was built in 1996.
The YMCA has partnerships and working relations with numerous community organizations. Today the YMCA of DeKalb County, Inc. serves tens of thousands of people annually.
